| I began my
career in 1972 in a shop that restored antique vehicles. In 1973 I became an
apprentice sign painter. I worked with two mean old guys who could paint
beautifully. It is a shame that
the apprentice system has been replace by higher education. There is a lot
to be gained from apprenticeship.
I have painted thousands of
signs. Now I do most of my sign work with a computer. It is not as
satisfying a process and requires much less skill. Progress in the sign
business is producing technicians and few artists.
I have been doing
calligraphy since I was 14 years old. The alphabets I like and use come from
hand lettering. |
