The focus
of this web site is on the DECORATION of fire apparatus through the past
two centuries. This is a topic that gets little attention in other web
sites and books. Here you will find
many close up photos of over 45 restored engines to show their painted details.
These decorations are historically accurate, usually exact copies of what
was on the vehicle when it left the factory. I carefully remove layers of paint to find the original paint job. I document this and
also search for old photos of the vehicle. Most antique engines have been
repainted several times. Few owners realize how elaborate their vehicle
looked when it was new. These vehicles were the pride of the community.
They were more than just a practical machine. They saved lives and
protected neighborhoods from the awesome destructive power of fire.
Mechanical and historical
aspects of these fascinating machines are not dealt with in any detail here.
There are other web sites and books that can help you with these interests.
My Links page can direct you to some information in
these areas. |

HAND DRAWN
ENGINES
These early engines were in use
from approximately 1800 to 1900. It took several people to pull them, and many more people to operate. It was strenuous work to power
to pump, but more efficient than the bucket brigades of previous years.

STEAM ENGINES
Large communities from
about 1850 to 1920 switched to these engines. A coal fired boiler powered
the pump. Only a few men were needed and the pump could work continuously
for many hours. Most of these heavy machines required horses to pull them.

MISC. APPARATUS
Along with a pumping
engine, firefighters needed other vehicles. Some hauled hose, or ladders,
or firefighters. Other apparatus, like the one pictured, had specialized
uses.

AHRENS-FOX
ENGINES
This company had a distinctive design, with the pump
being located at the front of the truck. I have worked on more of these,
than any other brand.

AMERICAN LaFRANCE
ENGINES
This company is still in
business, after 175 years. Their decoration was beautifully designed and
hand painted.

OTHER
MOTORIZED ENGINES
There were many other
manufacturers of engines, such as Maxim and Seagrave. Each builder had a
unique scheme of decoration for their trucks.

MODERN TRUCKS
I have not decorated many
trucks built in the last 50 years. After World War II, fire vehicles had
little in the way of decoration.

ORIGINAL ANTIQUE
DECORATION
I have included several
photos of old apparatus where the original decoration has survived. This
is to show the inventiveness and craftsmanship or these early nameless
decorators.
