GOLD  LEAF on BOATS
page 2

The name GEM STONE has gold leaf and palladium leaf. Silver leaf will tarnish outdoors, so I use palladium when a customer wants "silver". The name SILHOUETTE is also palladium.

Gold comes in different "karats" that describe how pure the gold is. 24 karat is pure gold. I use 23 karat gold on boats. Any karat below that will tarnish slowly when exposed to weather, even if it has varnish over it. There are other kinds of metal leaf, such as copper, aluminum and bronze. All of these will begin to look weathered in a short while on a boat.
