AMERICAN  LaFRANCE  ENGINES
page 3

All American LaFrance engines had similar decoration. One way to customize a truck was to pick a distinctive background color. The example to the right is from a San Francisco engine. All trucks in San Francisco for the past 100 years have been painted this very dark maroon. At a muster or large fire, one city's unique colored trucks would stand out from the rest. Certain towns would have white, blue, tan or any other color trucks. Red is the norm, but not a hard and fast rule.
